Asia's Economic Outlook: Weathering the Global Crisis While Confronting Rising Inequality

As the United States engages in its “pivot” to Asia and the Pacific and with a looming debt crisis in Europe possibly undermining Asia’s growth, the 2012 Asian Development Outlook analyzes the challenges faced by Asia as economic inequality widens despite the region’s vast economic gains. 

Will Asia's growth contribute to stabilizing the world economy? Can policymakers take sufficient measures to address economic disparities in a region home to two-thirds of the world's poor, where some 1.8 billion people still live on less than $2 a day? What are the immediate economic prospects for developing Asia and what risks lie ahead?  To what extent will the sovereign debt crisis in Europe undermine Asian growth?  What are the consequences for Asia if inequality is allowed to widen further?

On April 23, CNAS co-hosted an event in partnership with the Asian Development Bank and the Asia Society on what lies ahead for Asia and the Pacific and how the economic success of the region addresses national security concerns of the United States.
