Robert M. Gates and Leon E. Panetta Fellows

CNAS has established the two fellowships in honor of Secretaries of Defense Leon Panetta and Robert Gates, and their shared commitment to public service and bipartisan solutions to U.S. national security challenges. 

These fellowships will be awarded to highly qualified Democratic and Republican candidates who demonstrate extraordinary potential, a commitment to service, and the professionalism and integrity exemplified by Secretaries Gates and Panetta.

Loren DeJonge Schulman serves as the Center's deputy director of studies and Leon E. Panetta Fellow. Her research interests include national security and defense strategy and reform, with focus on strengthening and modernizing the U.S. national security toolkit. Ms. Schulman most recently served as the Senior Advisor to National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Before returning to the White House in 2013, she was Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, advising on security policy issues related to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Russia.

Adam Klein serves as the Center's Robert M. Gates Senior Fellow. Before coming to CNAS, Adam served as a law clerk to Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court and Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and was a Senior Associate at WilmerHale, an international law firm. He has also worked on national security policy at the RAND Corporation and the 9/11 Public Discourse Project, the nonprofit successor to the 9/11 Commission.  He began his career as a legislative assistant in the office of U.S. Representative C.W. “Bill” Young.
