The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) held a discussion with author David Ucko on his recent book The New Counterinsurgency Era with press and national security experts. John Nagl, president of CNAS and author of the book’s foreword, gave a brief introduction.

In The New Counterinsurgency Era, already dubbed “one of the most valuable books on military affairs,” David Ucko examines the Department of Defense’s institutional obstacles and initially slow response to a changing strategic reality. But while pointing out some of the Pentagon's failures, Ucko also focuses on ways the military has improved its ability to conduct stability operations and efforts it has taken to change the institutional bias against counterinsurgency. This book will certainly prove a "must-read" for anyone interested in how the U.S. military can better prepare for the unique challenges of the changing face of war in the 21st century.

David Ucko is a transatlantic fellow at the RAND Corporation, specializing in counterinsurgency, stability operations, and conflict analysis. He has previously worked as a research fellow at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, and as a deputy defense analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
