The economic, political, and military rise of India is reshaping world politics and promises to make India both a true global power and one of the most important bilateral partners for the United States. Indeed, the strengthened relationship between the United States and India is arguably one of the biggest triumphs of American foreign policy of the past 15 years. But while the Obama administration has taken steps toward deepening the ties between the two countries, many prominent experts from both India and the United States fear that the relationship has stalled.

On October 20, in advance of President Obama’s trip to India this November, the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) will release a major report on this critical relationship, Natural Allies: A Blueprint for the Future of U.S.-India relations. The event will feature a provocative discussion with the report’s authors, former Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage, former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns – both members of the CNAS Board of Directors – and CNAS Senior Fellow Richard Fontaine. Ambassador Frank Wisner, who served as U.S. Ambassador to India in the mid-1990s, will also provide remarks. Natural Allies, endorsed by a prominent group of U.S.-India experts, offers a series of recommendations for deepening U.S.-India relations and provides a blueprint for the path forward.
