Round Table Discussion on Post-Traumatic Growth

Jan 15, 2009
12:00pm to 2:00pm

CNAS Conference Room
Washington, DC

January 15, 2009--The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) held a round table lunch discussion addressing the management challenges presented by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and possible options for developing policies to foster post-traumatic growth (PTG). Post-traumatic stress disorder has hit the force particularly hard; however, some individuals also experience positive changes, a phenomenon referred to a post-traumatic growth. Indeed, service members may experience PTG along with PTSD or other mental of physical injury, and DOD and VA are increasing their efforts to understand PTG and resiliency. How might post-traumatic growth be incorporated into military mental health management? Or would a focus on growth and resiliency undermine efforts to improve treatment for those most gravely affected?  This conversation will help frame the forthcoming CNAS report on the national security implications of PTSD and strategic options for incoming Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) leaders.
