CNAS Senior Fellow Colin Kahl Named Deputy Assistant to the President and National Security Advisor to the Vice President

Washington, September 24 – Center for a New American Security (CNAS) Senior Fellow and Middle East Security Program Director Colin Kahl was named Deputy Assistant to the President and National Security Advisor to the Vice President, the White House announced. In the position, he will serve as a key foreign policy and security advisor to Vice President Joe Biden. Dr. Kahl has served at CNAS since 2012.

“We are proud that the Administration has called on an innovative, capable security and foreign policy professional like Colin,” said CNAS CEO Michèle Flournoy. “Colin was an instrumental member of our team, and we will miss him dearly. Yet CNAS understands that it is critical for our national interests that people like Colin serve our country at the highest levels. We congratulate him on his appointment.”

Dr. Kahl joins a long line of former CNAS leaders who have entered key policy-making positions in the U.S. government. Previous CNAS figures include former CNAS CEO Robert O. Work, who now serves as Deputy Secretary of Defense; CNAS Co-Founder Kurt Campbell, who served as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs; and former CNAS Director of Studies James Miller, who served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.
