Dr. Daniel Kliman, former Senior Advisor for Asia Integration at DoD, named CNAS Asia-Pacific Security Program Senior Fellow

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) announced today that Dr. Daniel Kliman has joined the Center as a Senior Fellow in the Asia-Pacific Security Program. As a Senior Fellow, he will cover a broad range of issues, including U.S. competition with China, better integrating America’s allies, sustaining U.S. military advantage in the Asia-Pacific, and securing America's innovation edge.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dan back to CNAS,” said CNAS President Richard Fontaine. “Both in and out of government, Dan has consistently performed at the cutting edge of national security policy, bringing together deep analysis, unique insights, and genuine creativity. His work at the intersection of Asia, strategy, and U.S. policy will have great impact for years to come. We very much look forward to working with him once again.”

Kliman, an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, served as Senior Advisor for Asia Integration in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy prior to joining CNAS. He was the principal Asia expert for development and implementation of the Third Offset Strategy and executed multiple international engagements focused on defense innovation. Kliman previously served as a Visiting Fellow in the Asia-Pacific Security Program at CNAS.

Dr. Patrick Cronin, Director of CNAS’ Asia-Pacific Security Program, echoed Fontaine’s sentiment. “Dan is precisely the kind of bold, bipartisan, innovative thinker whose ideas can help keep the United States secure and competitive in a world in which Asia’s impact looms large. Kliman previously served as a Senior Advisor with the Asia Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. He is the author of two books, Fateful Transitions: How Democracies Manage Rising Powers, from the Eve of World War I to China’s Ascendance and Japan’s Security Strategy in the Post-9/11 World: Embracing a New Realpolitik. He has published in outlets including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Politico, ForeignPolicy.com, and CNN.com.
